Egalitarian here! 👋 I just want to thank you for not misrepresenting this belief. I truly believe all people of all ethnicities and both genders are equal in value and dignity. And God will call and equip whomever he chooses for whatever task he would have for them. I truly believe men and women complement one another. But unlike the belief of “complementarianism”, I do not believe in hierarchy, that men are on top and get the final say on everything. That they have the right to play the ‘man’ card in a disagreement with a woman. Jesus never played this card. I believe this goes against Christian teaching that instructs all believers to humbly count others higher than themselves. According to “complementarianism”, (which I think has a deceptive name), women cannot be leaders or influencers of the church body. They have nothing unique to contribute spiritually to the church. The greatest abuses all throughout human history stem an idea of social hierarchy: the African slave trade, the Holocaust, etc. As a chaplain I can tell you that child abuse and domestic violence thrive best in heavy “complementarian” circles. I am not saying there is abuse in all their churches or anything like that. But abuse doesn’t start with punches and blows, it starts with a type of thinking that others are born less than you.

Dazhoni comments on Theological Term of the Week

Hi, Rebecca. Have you heard of the Trinity debate and how the complementarian belief on ESS goes against the Nicene creed? CBMW did not retract their statement. I think the name ‘complementarian’ is rather deceptive, since the word in itself gives the idea of equality, that both sexes have strengths and and functions that the other does not. But the complementarian belief itself has special designated church ‘roles’ for men and no special ‘roles’ for women. Except to get a husband and have children. What message does this give to single women or women who are unable to have children. Also, complementarians use the word ‘role’ in a way that the word has never been used. As ‘roles’, by definition, are subject to change. A person doesn’t play the role of a student, wife, father, etc. until the circumstances call for it. Complementarians use the word the mean ‘women are subordinate and that can never change’.

Sean comments on Theological Term of the Week

A 20th century theologian (Louis Berkhof), and a 20th century document (The Three Points of Common Grace, 1924) are obviously not evidence of "common grace", and the verses you cite don't say anything about God showing grace to the reprobate wicked. In fact, no where in Scripture does it use the word "grace" for the reprobate, so on what grounds should we use the word "grace" when God doesn't?

In Psalm 69, we read Christ's prayer against the reprobate wicked. Where do you see "grace" in that prayer? We read:

"21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

22 Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.

23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.

24 Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.

25 Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.

26 For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.

27 Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.

28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous."

Dale K comments on Theological Term of the Week

This site is a real treat!
